Weekly Devotional

June 2, 2008

God’s Peace be with you all.

Genesis 1:26-31  26 Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth."  27 So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.  28 God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth."  29 God said, "See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.  30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so.  31 God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

This year our VBS material is entitled “A Rainforest Adventure.”  Each day we will have another theme on which the week grows.  However, the week does include a larger theme, one that is all around us all the time.  This theme is about going “green”.

Now whether or not you believe in Global Warming, or really in going “green”, there is a lesson in this for all of us.  Going green may be a new concept, as is Global Warming, but taking care of God’s creation is not a new concept.  Recycling is not a new concept, and neither is trying to be good stewards of the things that God has first given us.  As a matter of fact, as God’s children we are called to help creation in any way that we can.  Recently, Carrie and I started recycling.  We both did this with our families when we were little kids, but since being married, we have not worried about it.  However, with the addition of Addison, we noticed that our trash can needed to hold more and more, yet its capacity stayed the same.  Since we have been recycling, we have noticed that our trash can is less full every week, and now we are considering dropping our trash service.

Taking care of God’s creation has been the job of human beings since the very beginning.  This week at VBS we will all discuss how we can better be stewards of the creation that God has given us.  After all, everything that God has created is good, and we should therefore treat it that way.  I hope to see all of you this week as we use VBS to learn, teach, share, and grow in our faith and love towards our wonderful God.

In our prayers this week:  Linwood and Gail, Alma, Deborah Steed.

God’s Peace,

Pastor Judson
