1 Peter 4:10 10 Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.
As I mentioned yesterday in my sermon, November is Stewardship month. Yesterday my sermon focused on how we are stewards of the Gospel. For the remaining Sundays, we will focus on being a steward of our time, a steward of our possessions, and a steward of ourselves. In order to accurately portray how we are to be good stewards, I think it is appropriate that we all begin on the same page as to what being a steward means. According to Dictionary.com, a steward is:
A person who manages another's property or financial affairs; one who administers anything as the agent of another or others.
This seems to fit, but let’s change a few of the words. As Christians, our definition of a steward is this:
A follower of Christ who manages the good things God has entrusted to us; one who administers anything as a member of the Body of Christ.
Everything that we have is due to the goodness of God. God has made the world and everything that is in it. He didn’t make part of it for you and part of it for me, but instead made it all for everyone. To be a good steward means that we will use God’s resources appropriately to the best of our ability, offering back to God the things that God has first done and given for us. We have the honor of worshiping a God who lays everything on the line for us. We have the honor of worshiping a God who gives and gives and gives, even when we cannot give everything back. This month we have the opportunity to focus on how we do give back to God. We also have the opportunity to raise our pledges, as a sign that we want to be a better steward of all that God has first given us.
Our focus for the month comes from the Bible verse above. I encourage each of you to examine how God’s grace has benefited your life, and how you can perhaps use that to not only serve others, but also serve your Lord and Savior.
In our prayers this week: Lee, Chris and Michael, Buddy, and Linwood.
