Sgt Dennis Hurdle
submitted by grandson Peter Patrick 2009
I'm not sure of what regiment my grandfather was in, all I know is the company and platoon. I do know he was part of the training cadre. He requested many times to be sent
overseas but due to medical issue's he was denied and kept at Camp Croft rising to the rank of TSgt. Unfortunately after the war ended he was still disappointed that he wasn't allowed to deploy and got out of the service, a decision he
regretted in later years. He served as a police officer in Elizabeth
City North Carolina for 23 years after the military. He died in 1974
of cancer. He is survived by his wife Gloria "Hurdle" Askew and his
four children; Dennis, Diana, Peggy and Paul along with multiple
grandchildren.
Myself and two of my older brothers are extremely proud of our
grandfather and have served in the United States Air Force since
1985, Jon has now retired and Michael and I are coming up on
retirement. I'm not sure if any of the gentlemen in the picture are
still with us but I'm sure all my family would love to hear anything
anyone remembers from those days between 1942 and 1945. These
gentlemen were absolutely "The Greatest Generation" and we are proud
of them all.
