POWELL FAMILY CEMETERY,
West Croft Circle
Located on West Croft Circle, the
US Army carefully
avoided disturbing the area during the construction of
Camp Croft in
the 1940's. this cemetery had
several markers but was bulldozed in the 1970's by an
unscrupulous
developer intent on building low income housing on the
site. He was stopped in part by Rembert Powell who's
family at one time owned most the land between now Dairy
Ridge road and the camp cantonment area. Information
from multiple sources indicates this site may contain as
many as 24 graves. Here is an interesting
image,
taken in 1946 as the camp was being dismantled.
You can see the
foundations of the barracks and mess halls on the
right of the
photo. The buildings in the regimental area are,
of course, now
gone and replaced by apartments. What is
believed to be the
cemetery is denoted by the red arrow. From the
photo above, you
can see that nothing as ever built on this portion of
the property.
