The
initial plans for
the camp included 284 barracks designed to house the 16,500 trainees
expected at any one time. Similar barracks were required to house the
training and support staff. Before long the camp could boast 321
barracks covering almost 1.5 million square feet of living space and
capable of housing 19,115 men!
"The barracks to which you are
assigned
is home for you and your barracks-mates. Treat it as such. Keep it
clean
at all times. The less dirt you track in and the fewer papers you
scatter
around, the easier it will be to prepare for inspection. Barracks will
be
swept and mopped at least once a day. Beds will be kept made at
all
times during the day. Clothing will be hung in a specific manner.
Consult
the chart in your barracks. Shoes under bunks will be laced,
polished, and lined up. Bunks, equipment, and foot lockers will be
arranged as charted. Lights are turned out at Tattoo, 2100 (9:00
p.m.). There will be no talking or unnecessary noise after that time."
